We are still celebrating our Newcastle site's success at the Hunter Manufacturing Awards (HMA) held in Newcastle on 17 October. We won the prestigious Hunter Manufacturer of the Year Award, the Excellence in Safety Award and also came highly commended in Excellence in Marketing.

Last year Austube Mills introduced our Community Sponsorship Program so that we could give back to the various communities that have been our home over the past 80 years. As part of this program, we sponsored the Merewether Lady Golfers Charity Day in July this year, which raised $2,150 for the Ronald McDonald House in Newcastle.

Austube Mills’ Somerton site and Newcastle based Manager, Safety, Quality, Environment and Training Garry Meagher, donated their winnings from this year's Arrium Safety Excellence Awards to charity.Garry Meagher donated his $1,000 from receiving the Geoff Plummer Arrium Safety Leader of the Year Award to the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF).

If the sun shone for one day through the weeks of rain Newcastle has been experiencing recently, it fittingly was the day Austube Mills’ head office celebrated our 80th anniversary. On 4 September 100 of the site’s current employees joined Newcastle’s Deputy Lord Mayor Brad Luke, Austube Mills CEO Naomi James, special guests and more than 100 former site employees, to commemorate the business’ achievements over the past eight decades.

Demonstrating on a daily basis the importance of safety in the production and transport of our steel products is our Acacia Ridge Site Operations Manager, Darren Newbegin. Darren has been named as a finalist for the Individual Safety Leader Award in the Steel Transport Safety Network Awards on Thursday 7 August 2014. The Steel Transport Safety Network is a part of the Australian Steel Institute which is Australia's peak steel industry association promoting Australian steel in manufacturing.

All our finalists in the Arrium Safety Excellence Awards went home victorious on 23 July, taking home three of the seven Excellence Awards, showcasing the sheer talent of our Austube Mills team to embed safety across our entire business every day. Garry Meagher, Shane Layt and the team at our Somerton manufacturing facility, outshone against the rest of Arrium’s 9,000-employee international business portfolio, by demonstrating the best practice principles it takes to uphold the Austube Mills commitment to one of its Core Values, Safety.
