We are still celebrating our Newcastle site's success at the Hunter Manufacturing Awards (HMA) held in Newcastle on 17 October.
We won the prestigious Hunter Manufacturer of the Year Award, the Excellence in Safety Award and also came highly commended in Excellence in Marketing.
In front of more than 500 people from the Hunter’s manufacturing industry, Austube Mills was recognised for our longevity and contribution to the local steel industry over the past 80 years.
“Austube Mills [has] cemented its value and presence as a great, long-standing manufacturer,” HMA chairman Bob Cowan said.
“We are a strong manufacturing region and Austube Mills is a manufacturer the Hunter can be proud of. They are indeed a very worthy winner of the Hunter Manufacturer of the Year Award for 2014”.
The judging panel acknowledged our commitment to our people, our customers and our products during difficult market conditions - maintaining our national market leadership by excelling through every one of our business channels.
The competition for the top award was tough against outstanding businesses such as Downer Rail, WesTrac, Varley Group and also our fellow Arrium OneSteel companies.
“Such positive support and praise from the HMA judges for our business’ values and practices was highly regarded and welcome praise for all our site’s employees,” said General Manager Richard Clement.
“Our team, of more than 100 staff members, has such passionate dedication to manufacturing quality steel pipe and tube that it’s wonderful to be publicly acknowledged for it.”
Winning the overall award was the icing on the cake though, as the Excellence in Safety Award was the one our business was determined to do well in.
“Safety is never second at Austube Mills; our reductions in lost time and medically treated injuries are the evidence that our proactive approach to safety is having a beneficial impact,” Richard said.
“Arrium’s 2014 Safety Leader of the Year Award recipient Garry Meagher is our national manager for safety, quality, environment and training, and he works out of our Newcastle site. Garry and his team are really at the forefront of best practice safety in manufacturing and winning the safety award proves that our entire workforce, with them at the helm, is successfully embedding a positive safety culture.”
We thank HMA for our prize to send an employee to attend a trade fair event relevant to our expertise. We know this professional development opportunity will greatly assist us to continue to manufacture quality steel pipe and tube in the heart of Newcastle, as well as at our sites in Victoria and Queensland, for many more years to come.
