Austube Mills' safety success at Arrium Safety Excellence Awards

Key points

All our finalists in the Arrium Safety Excellence Awards went home victorious on 23 July, taking home three of the seven Excellence Awards, showcasing the sheer talent of our Austube Mills team to embed safety across our entire business every day.

Garry Meagher, Shane Layt and the team at our Somerton manufacturing facility, outshone against the rest of Arrium’s 9,000-employee international business portfolio, by demonstrating the best practice principles it takes to uphold the Austube Mills commitment to one of its Core Values, Safety.

At the awards in Sydney, Austube Mills Manager, Safety, Quality, Environment and Training Garry Meagher was announced as the Geoff Plummer Arrium Safety Leader of the Year, the flagship award of the evening, and the one won by Austube Mills’ Newcastle Site Operations Manager Graham Hasemann last year.

“To win this award two years in a row proves Austube Mills is on the right path towards achieving world-class safety,” General Manager Richard Clement said. “Our leaders are not only showing our business how to deliver safety best practice, they are also demonstrating this to the wider Arrium group as well.”

Our Somerton site also took out the Excellence Award for the best Department/Site and Shane Layt from Skilled Engineering, for Contractor/Supplier.

“Today Austube Mills not only celebrates with pride the achievements of our finalists, but also the achievements of the entire business they represent,” Richard said.

“Safety is embedded in the culture and the very essence of everything that we do and while this success is extremely pleasing, we must now use it to continue to propel us forward as safety in our industry is always an ongoing journey.”
