Helping to keep manufacturing very much alive and well in the Hunter are two Austube Mills employees, Daniel Hodges and Tony Stankovski, who were recognised for their efforts in this year’s Hunter Manufacturing Awards in October 2013.
Daniel Hodges was the successful recipient of the Manufacturing Employee of the Year, Rising Star Award; the category in which both men were finalists.
In accepting his award, Daniel acknowledged his fellow Austube Mills employees for their support and expertise to help him achieve such great contributions to the local steel industry.
“I’d like to thank my boss and my colleagues from Austube Mills for making my workplace both challenging and enriching,” Daniel said.
“Thank you to the wider Arrium business, where I’ve been fortunate enough to work with many, many capable people passionate about the development of our internal capability.
“It is very positive to see such a great display of manufacturing excellence in this room in what is a challenging, but critical, sector of the Australian economy.
“As you would all be aware, success in manufacturing is not an individual endeavour. So in accepting this award, I must acknowledge the role that others have played in whatever achievement I may have had so far in my career.”
Daniel was recognised for his dedicated and committed career where, since beginning his Engineering Cadetship with OneSteel in 2009, he has consistently displayed a level of confidence, capability and leadership beyond his age and experience.
As a Cadet, Daniel was known for his proactive attitude to learning and teamwork. With previous experience as a qualified mechanic and a hands-on approach to tackling projects, Daniel is now a full-time Reliability Engineer with the newly rebranded Austube Mills business. Daniel manages to balance ongoing university studies in Mechanical Engineering with his full-time role, and continues to demonstrate a passion for and commitment to safety and quality.
Over the past three years, Daniel has exceeded workplace targets supporting safety and quality standards and has stepped up to take on additional initiatives that support Arrium’s deeply embedded ‘Goal Zero’ safety principles.
Since working with Austube Mills, one of Daniel’s most notable contributions has been the development and leadership of a Lubrication team focused on building competencies around equipment maintenance. This work is positively impacting upon overall productivity and yield across the manufacturing plant.
Tony Stankovski’s leadership and commitment to the Arrium ‘Goal Zero’ safety principles was what made him an outstanding finalist.
Tony is a frontline shift supervisor at Austube Mills and has worked with the company for three years. In this role, Tony carries responsibility for the major facets of production, product quality control and on-site safety. Managing crews ranging from 15 to 30 people, Tony is recognised for his high degree of professionalism, communication and leadership.
Tony is regarded as being dedicated and committed not only to the safety of employees and contractors, but also the surrounding environment. This commitment has been demonstrated on many occasions through a perceptiveness and astuteness around identifying and rectifying potential hazards. Beyond Tony’s ability to recognise potential issues, he is considered by his team and peers as having the ability to engage others in addressing issues or incidents through his professional, sensitive and interactive style.
Tony is not only an exceptional leader but also an integral team member who sets clear goals and objectives for his teams to achieve, and then gets on the ground to help them achieve them together. He engages, motivates and inspires employees to strive for best practice manufacturing processes, which includes focusing on safety as a key underpinning value to exceeding those expectations.
“Safety underpins everything we do at Austube Mills and as a supervisor, it is my responsibility to lead by example and ensure we continue to produce quality products in an environment that ensures our guys go home happy each day,” Tony said.
Austube Mills congratulates both our finalists and is proud to boast such manufacturing expertise and talent within our company. Employees like Daniel and Tony are helping to drive best practice principles and innovation in an industry dear to the hearts of the people in the Hunter.
