Australian steel enhances Sunshine Coast hospital project

Product: Rectangular Hollow Structural Sections (RHS).

Project: Lend Lease Building construction of Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital, Queensland.

Situation: Lend Lease Building awarded Regson Fabrication the first multi-deck car park facade package. When Regson Fabrication’s Managing Director, Les McMillan, saw the draft drawings were specified to use imported angle members, he knew that Austube Mills’ RHS would be a better structural fit to make the structure as strong and durable as possible.

Solution: Les suggested to the Lend Lease Building team that the angle members could be substituted with RHS, which is an Australian made, lighter product. Although RHS is slightly more expensive, he assured Lend Lease the benefit of using RHS over imported angles would far outweigh the cost.

It is important that fabrication projects are already scoped to used first-grade Australian steel products so that our finished products are free from defects and exceed our clients’ expectations.

Results:

  • The ability of RHS to make better, stronger connections to other materials which, when fabricating a multi-level car park where safety and strength are priorities, makes choosing something of a higher quality the only option.
  • Choosing a reliable supplier in InfraBuils Steel Centre Coopers Plains, meant the 140 tonne of RHS was delivered on time and in good condition. Because of the tight schedule, the centre had the resources and capability to live up to their promises.
  • The high quality and consistency of our RHS allowed Regson Fabrication to obtain a superb galvanized finished product, while making sure it upheld the Lend Lease project brief.

“It is important that fabrication projects are already scoped to use first-grade Australian steel products so that our finished products are free from defects and exceed our clients’ expectations,” Les said. Les believes that Australia produces some of the world’s highest quality steel products that are third-party certified and pass strict quality assurance checks. “Regson Fabrication knows there are tough conditions facing the manufacturing industry so by purchasing Australian made products, we are doing our bit to retain jobs and keep the money flowing through our local economy,” Les said.

Our Queensland Sales Manager, Adrian Bothams, said it’s great that Australian companies such as Regson Fabrication appreciate the real value of a local supply chain in delivering quality design and construction outcomes, particularly on such an important project for the community. “The success of the car park façade is testament to the uncompromising attitude of Regson Fabrication with the manufacturing, distribution, fabrication and installation teams, all working hard to achieve the common goal,” Adrian said.
